12hr Notice of Race

The next Southport Sailing Club National Junior 12 Hour Race will be held on Saturday 26th June 2027, 8am-8pm.

THE RACE

The race is open to the following classes of dinghy: – GP14, Enterprise, RS Quest and Argo Dinghies. All boats must conform to class rules, spinnakers must be symmetrical and trapezes are not allowed 

Teams must be from a Club, Youth Organisation or School (hereafter referred to as clubs).  Only one boat from each team may race, though entrants may hold a reserve boat of the same class, reserve sails and gear. 

The Race will be sailed under the International Sailing Federation Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescriptions of the RYA, the appropriate Class Rules and the Event’s Sailing Instructions.  These Sailing Instructions will be amended to conform with RRS 2021 –2025 and will be published on the SSC Website.  

Changing rule RRS J1.2, any changes to the racing rules will be stated in the sailing instructions.  

The Sailing Instructions may vary certain paragraphs of this Notice of Race.

TEAM MEMBERS

Team members in an Under 20 Team must be under 20 years of age on the day of the race. Team members in an Under 18 Team must be under eighteen years on the day of the race. There is no lower age limit. The minimum number of members in a team is four; however there shall be no upper limit on the number of members in each team. Different age groups can win a range of trophies and awards during the twelve hours. 

THE COURSE

The triangular course, a chart of which will appear on the Sailing Notices Board, is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and comprises five marks. 

FEES

Race fees will be as stated on the entry form. 

TEAM MANAGERS

Each team must have a named Team Manager who is a responsible adult, approved by the Management of the Club or Organisation entering the team. The Team Manager must be familiar with their Club’s Child Protection Policy, or in the absence of such a policy the RYA’s Child Protection guidelinesThe Team Manager must also have a sound knowledge of sailing, be aware of the individual capabilities of the team members and also be capable of making appropriate decisions regarding the safety of the team in the varying weather conditions which may be encountered during the course of the event. The Team Manager must be present on site throughout the event.

ENTERING

Competitors participate in the event entirely at their own risk.

Personal flotation devices adequate for the conditions must be worn by all competitors when afloat.

Southport Sailing Club, its officers, safety boat drivers and staff, scrutineers and members, or any other person co-opted to assist in the running of the event, will not accept any liability for any loss, material damage, personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with, prior to, during, or after the event.  

It is the responsibility of Team Managers, and their non-sailing adult team members and visiting parents to ensure the safety and good behaviour of team members, before, during and after the event. 

MEDICAL

Teams are advised to contact parents of their team members to: 

a.     Obtain parents/guardians/carers consent to take part in the event. 

b.     Ascertain details of any known medical conditions that may affect team members during the event, and obtain parental permission for the organisers to take their child to hospital, and receive any required treatment in accordance with a hospital’s diagnosis, should the need arise. 

Any information relating to (b) above should be communicated in writing to the Event Management Team and first-aiders before the start of the race. 

INSURANCE DECLARATIONS

a.     For privately owned boats, a declaration by the boat owner that he/she holds adequate third party insurance for the event is required.
This declaration must be handed to reception before the race. If the owner will not be present at the race then the declaration must be prepared and signed in advance and handed in by the owner’s representative. 

b.     A separate Insurance Declaration for Club owned boats, signed by a person authorised by the Club Management Committee, will be necessary and must also be handed to reception before the start of the race.

PROTEST FLAGS

Protest Flags will be required for this event. 

CLASS CERTIFICATES AND BOUYANCY TEST ENDORSEMENTS

Class Certificates, including the current buoyancy test endorsement when required by the Class Rules will be required. 

NUMBER OF TEAMS PER CLUB

A club may enter one, two or three teams. 

JOINT TEAMS

A club that has too few juniors to justify entering a team on their own may contact another club/organisation in a similar position, and form a joint team. 

GALLEY

The galley will be open at advertised times throughout the event. 

COMMUNICATIONS

In any communication regarding the above kindly state the name of your Sailing Club/Youth Organisation/School and your position within the organisation.
